What is Spinal Cord Injury?

A spinal cord injury, most of the times, is a result of a sudden, traumatic blow to the spine. The injury displaces bone fragments, disc material, or ligaments bruise or tear into spinal cord tissue. An injury does not sever it, but mostly fractures and compresses the vertebrae, which destroys nerve cells extensions called axons that carry brains signals up and down the spinal cord. While a person recovers from some injuries, some others result into complete paralysis.
Stem Cell Therapy for Spinal Cord Injury
Stem cells are known to have a tangible application in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). These cells, by property are postulated to induce neurogenesis (regeneration of the affected portion of the brain matrix and spinal cord) and consequently bring about a signi cant reversal of symptoms. Improvement is reached through restoration of the lost (impaired) neuron connections and formation of the new neuronal connections; speeding up brain reactions through improvement of synaptic transmission and development of the new neuronal connections. Multiple paracrine factors and interleukins secreted by stem cells contribute to endogenous repair.
Observations
The patient can feel symptomatic improvement in sensorimotor functions after therapy.
